Set up or edit a Virtual Fob

How to send a Virtual Fob via email or change when it can be used.

Updated over 6 years ago

Great! You've created a new Virtual Fob, sending it to a friend or changing its settings is just as easy.

Let's start by getting to the Manage Virtual Fob screen. If you just created a new Virtual Fob, you'll be taken there immediately. Otherwise, choose Virtual Fobs on the left menu, and then select the blue edit icon next to the Virtual Fob that you want to set up or edit.

This article has lots of info, so here's what we'll cover in case you want to skip some:

  • Enabling or Disabling

  • Sending

  • Validity Times

Enabling or Disabling

Enabling/Disabling a Virtual Fob lets you turn it on or off without losing any other settings.

To enable or disable a Virtual Fob, simply flip the Enabled switch at the top of the Manage screen. Your changes take immediate effect.

If the fob holder attempts to use the fob, they'll see a message indicating that the fob is not currently enabled.

You can disable or enable a Virtual Fob at any time. Doing so will not delete any Validity Times that you have set.

Sending

You can send a Virtual Fob via email directly from your Buzzly Dashboard.

  • Enter the Fob Holder's email address.

  • A Send button will appear beside the email address you've entered.

  • Click Send.

  • We'll send an email to the Fob Holder with the secure link to to their new Virtual Fob, along with an explanation of how it works. (And of course, we don't add Fob Holder email addresses to any kind of marketing lists, that wouldn't be cool. 👎)

You can also copy the secure link to the Virtual Fob and send it to your new Fob Holder directly.

  • Click the Copy Link button beside Share via Link

  • The button will turn green to indicate that it's been copied to your clipboard.

  • Paste the link into a new message, email, or document to be printed and tied to a carrier pigeon. (Mac: ⌘+V, Windows: CTRL+V, Mobile: Long Press + Paste)

Validity Times

Validity Times refer to the days, dates, and times that a Virtual Fob can be used by the Fob Holder. For example, you might want to apply restrictions to a dog walker who's expected Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10am and 4pm only, or to an Airbnb guest who's reservation is for two specific dates with check-in and check-out times.

By default, validity is set to Always Valid. This means that the fob holder will be able to activate their fob 24/7/365.

To use validity times, choose the Use Validity Times option beside Validity

You can switch between Always Valid and Use Validity Times whenever you like. Switching this setting doesn't delete any validity times that you've created (don't worry!), they will simply have no effect while a fob is set to Always Valid.

You can also choose whether or not you wish to display the validity on the actual virtual fob or not by (un)checking Show Validity on Fob. When enabled, the Fob Holder will be able to see exactly when their fob is valid.

To set validity times:

Repeating Validity: These periods will happen every week on a specific day and time, for example, Mondays from 10am - 2pm.

One-Time Validity: These periods refer to a specific date and time, for example, Monday July 10th between 9pm and 11pm.

You can add both types of Validity Times to a single fob.

  • On the Validity Times pane, click the blue Repeating or One-Time bar to expand that section, depending which type you'd like to add.

  • Set the appropriate day/date and time range, then click the blue + button to save the validity time.

  • The new period will appear in the list.

  • Delete a period at any time by clicking on the red trash icon beside it.

All changes take immediate effect.
